"Trust me, I’ve asked a thousand people a hundred different questions about how to prevent it, why does it happen?" said the Duke alum.

Boston Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum recently opened up about the Achilles tendon injury that sidelined him for most of the 2025-26 NBA regular season, and his revelation might surprise fans who thought they knew the full story.

In a candid interview on TODAY's "Glass Half Full" show, Tatum described the setback as something of a fluke—a hard truth for a player known for his meticulous preparation and dedication to his craft. "Trust me, I've asked a thousand people a hundred different questions about how to prevent it, why does it happen?" said the Duke alum. "And every specialist I've talked to would say they'd be lying if they could tell you exactly why it happens."

The five-time All-Star recounted a particularly eye-opening moment from the day after his MRI. "I asked the doctor, 'If I got an MRI the day before, would you have been able to tell me that I was at risk?'" Tatum shared. "And he was like, 'Honestly, you might not want to hear this, but your tendon looks perfectly healthy. It was just an unlucky moment.'"

That diagnosis was a tough pill to swallow for a player who prides himself on doing everything right. "I was taking care of my body. I was getting treatment. I was doing all my strength work every game day. I was on top of it," Tatum explained. "So for him to say, 'Your tendon looked perfectly healthy. You just got unlucky'—that was a tough pill to swallow."

For athletes and fans alike, Tatum's story serves as a reminder that even the best preparation can't always prevent the unpredictable nature of sports. Whether you're hitting the court or hitting the gym, sometimes it's just about bouncing back stronger—and that's a mindset every player can learn from.
