The Los Angeles Lakers' playoff push just got a significant boost. Backup center Jaxson Hayes, who missed the final four games of the regular season with a foot issue, returned to practice on Tuesday, signaling he's on track for Game 1 this Saturday.
Hayes' presence is crucial as the Lakers prepare for a formidable first-round matchup. Their success hinges on containing the Houston Rockets' dynamic offense, which features the scoring prowess of Kevin Durant and the interior play of two-time All-Star Alperen Sengun. While Deandre Ayton will shoulder the starting duties, Hayes' energy and athleticism off the bench are vital for the Lakers' frontcourt rotation.
"Feeling a lot better," Hayes told reporters, including Daniel Starkand of Lakers Nation. He attributed the time off as "much-needed" rest for the accumulated wear and tear of a seven-year NBA career. "Seven years of jumping around the NBA at seven foot isn’t gonna be the best," he added with a smile, expressing no concern about his availability for the playoff opener.
His role is clearly defined: the Lakers don't need him to be a primary scorer. Instead, they need his rim protection and, most importantly, his rebounding against one of the league's best teams on the glass. Houston's prowess on the offensive boards demands that every Laker, especially Hayes, boxes out with physicality to limit second-chance points.
During the regular season, Hayes provided efficient production, averaging 7.5 points on a stellar 75.6% shooting, along with 4.1 rebounds in just over 18 minutes per game. His return to health adds essential depth and a defensive presence as the Lakers gear up for the postseason grind.
