Jasprit Bumrah ends 156-match wait: ‘I didn’t think I’d be India captain before MI captain’

Jasprit Bumrah captained Mumbai Indians for the first time in his 157th IPL match, a moment he found surprising. Stepping in due to unavailability of regular captains, Bumrah embraced the new challenge. Despite MI's tough season, he expressed a desire to enjoy the remaining games and learn from the experience, aiming to 'ruffle a few teams'.

In a moment that caught even him by surprise, Jasprit Bumrah finally captained Mumbai Indians for the first time in his 157th IPL match—a milestone that left him smiling at the toss. "I didn't think I'd be a Test captain before I'd captain Mumbai Indians," he quipped before MI's clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.

Bumrah stepped into the role after regular skipper Hardik Pandya was sidelined with a back spasm, while stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav missed the game for personal reasons. The wait was historic: Bumrah became the second-most experienced player to lead an IPL side for the first time, surpassing Manish Pandey (153 matches), Axar Patel (148), Kieron Pollard (137), and even teammate Suryakumar (126). Only Ravindra Jadeja waited longer, taking charge after 200 matches.

Now the 10th player to captain Mumbai Indians, Bumrah's debut adds a new chapter to a season full of twists for the five-time champions. Despite MI languishing near the bottom of the points table with just three wins from 11 matches, Bumrah's message was one of resilience. "When cricket gives you good days, you take it. When it gives you challenges, it's come to teach you something," he said.

With three games remaining, Bumrah is determined to make the most of the opportunity. "I like responsibility. This is a new challenge. I'll look to have fun," he shared, adding that the team aims to "ruffle a few teams" before the campaign ends. For a bowler who has been the backbone of MI's success for over a decade, finally wearing the captain's armband is a fitting tribute to his leadership and passion for the game.
