Jason Collins, the NBA's first openly gay active player and a trailblazer both on and off the court, passed away Tuesday at age 47 after an eight-month battle with glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Collins' family shared the heartbreaking news, remembering him as a beloved husband, son, brother, and uncle who "changed lives in unexpected ways." In a statement, they expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support during his fight and for the exceptional medical care he received.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver paid tribute to Collins, noting that his "impact and influence extended far beyond basketball." Silver highlighted how Collins helped make the NBA, WNBA, and the broader sports community more inclusive for future generations. "Jason will be remembered not only for breaking barriers, but also for the kindness and humanity that defined his life," Silver said.

Collins first revealed his stage 4 glioblastoma diagnosis in December, after initially experiencing symptoms in August. True to his athlete's spirit, he wrote in an essay for ESPN: "I had been having weird symptoms like this for a week or two, but unless something is really wrong, I'm going to push through. I'm an athlete."

Drafted 13th overall by the Houston Rockets in 2001, Collins enjoyed a 13-year NBA career that included stints with several teams. He was a key member of two New Jersey Nets squads that reached the NBA Finals in 2002 and 2003, showcasing the toughness and determination that defined his game.

Off the court, Collins' legacy as a barrier-breaker and advocate for inclusivity will forever be remembered, inspiring generations of athletes to come.
