Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford has opened up about the emotional rollercoaster of his return to the Etihad Stadium, admitting it "has obviously been very up and down."

The 23-year-old England international re-joined his boyhood club for £27 million in July 2025 after two seasons at Burnley, initially competing for the number one spot. He started City's first three Premier League matches of the season against Wolves, Tottenham, and Brighton, showing promising form between the posts.

However, the late-summer arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma changed everything. The Italian superstar quickly established himself as Pep Guardiola's first-choice goalkeeper, and Trafford has not made a single Premier League appearance since August 2025. His playing time has been limited to cup competitions ever since.

In a candid interview with BBC Sport, Trafford spoke about the mental challenge of losing his starting role. "Everyone always thinks when you make decisions like the best possible outcome, and obviously it hasn't been the best possible outcome," he said. "But I've just tried to improve every day, stay positive, and stay happy. The main thing I didn't want is for it to impact your general happiness."

The Carlisle-born shot-stopper admitted this season has been a significant learning experience. "It's the first time I've had a moment where you're coming in just for cup games," he explained. "I've had to learn a lot throughout the year and tried to work as hard as I can, try and win the day."

Despite his limited game time, the 23-year-old remains in demand. Aston Villa, Newcastle United, and Tottenham Hotspur have all expressed interest in signing him, with Newcastle reportedly ready to meet City's valuation this summer. Serie A giants have also entered the race, adding more intrigue to Trafford's next move.

For now, Trafford continues to train hard and stay ready, knowing that in football, fortunes can change quickly. Whether he stays to fight for his place or seeks regular minutes elsewhere, his resilience and positive mindset will be crucial assets.
