James Hagens didn't just make his NHL debut on Sunday; he made it count. The Boston Bruins' top prospect, selected seventh overall last summer, stepped onto the ice for the first time and helped his new team secure a 3-2 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets. After signing his entry-level contract earlier in the week following the end of his college season, Hagens wasted no time making an impression.
The moment was made even more special by the presence of 13 friends and family members, including his parents, brother, and sister, who flew in to witness his big day. "It was really cool looking up in warmups and seeing them there," Hagens shared postgame. "Seeing how much support they have for me... To be able to get that win, it was special."
That support was rewarded with a milestone, as Hagens picked up his first NHL point—a secondary assist on Henry Jokiharju's second-period goal. Skating on the third line with Marat Khusnutdinov and Fraser Minten, the young forward logged 13:08 of ice time, recording one assist, one shot, and showcasing the poise that made him a high draft pick.
His performance didn't go unnoticed by head coach Marco Sturm, who praised the entire line's composure. "I thought he was good," Sturm said. "They used their speed, they were not afraid to make plays... Coming in here in Columbus, it's a tough building. I was curious for James, too, how he was going to handle it, and I thought he did a good job."
With the Bruins set to conclude their regular season at home against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday, all eyes will be on whether Hagens has done enough to secure a spot in the playoff lineup. For now, the 19-year-old can reflect on a nearly perfect debut—a win, a point, and a memory made with family in the stands.
