For Jalen Kitna, the journey to the NFL draft has been a winding road, but a recent stop brought his story full circle. The quarterback prospect, son of former Cincinnati Bengals QB Jon Kitna, participated in the team's local pre-draft workout on Tuesday, stepping onto the field at Paycor Stadium—the same venue where he attended his first NFL game as a toddler.
In a poignant moment, Jalen donned a Bengals No. 3 practice jersey, the same number his father wore during his tenure with the team from 2001 to 2005. "It's obviously a great feeling getting to wear the number and just be out here," Jalen said. "This is a special opportunity with some family history, and I'm super thankful for it."
Jalen's path to this point has been unconventional. Growing up, he moved frequently due to his father's NFL career, which included stops in Detroit and Dallas before Jon transitioned to high school coaching. Jalen's own college career began at Florida but was derailed in 2022 following an arrest on charges that were later dropped in a plea deal. He pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors, and investigators found the shared images did not meet the criteria for the initial allegations.
Seeking a fresh start, Jalen transferred to UAB, where he rebuilt his profile over two seasons, throwing for 4,671 yards and 30 touchdowns. Now, as he navigates the pre-draft process, he addresses past questions head-on. "I got to answer them and just really tell the truth about what happened," he noted, emphasizing personal growth from the experience.
Tuesday's 25-minute workout allowed him to showcase his arm talent in front of Bengals personnel. While he's considered more likely to be a post-draft signing, the session was a meaningful step. For Jalen Kitna, it wasn't just another tryout—it was a chapter in a family legacy, blending past memories with future aspirations on familiar turf.
