When the New York Knicks stepped onto the court against the Atlanta Hawks in the first round of the NBA Playoffs, few expected them to struggle. As the heavy favorites, Coach Mike Brown's squad had the talent and the home-court advantage to make quick work of Coach Quin Snyder's Hawks. But basketball is a game of adjustments, and the Knicks needed to find theirs. After a hard-fought series, New York emerged as the first team in the Eastern Conference to punch their ticket to the second round. So, what was the secret weapon that turned the tide? According to Knicks star Jalen Brunson, it all came down to one thing: defense.

During the regular season, the Knicks were already a respectable defensive team. They posted a 113.3 defensive rating, good for seventh in the entire league. But when the playoffs began, they flipped a switch. In their series against the Hawks, New York ratcheted up the intensity, improving their defensive rating to an eye-popping 103.9. That kind of leap isn't just incremental—it's transformative. As Brunson explained to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic, "I think, most importantly, a performance like this shows us what we’re capable of defensively. That’s really important. We still have a long road to travel, so staying locked in and knowing what we’re capable of is really important."

To put that improvement into perspective, if the Knicks had maintained that 103.9 defensive rating during the regular season, they would have led the entire league by a wide margin. For context, the Oklahoma City Thunder finished the regular season with a 106.5 defensive rating, which was the best in the NBA. The Knicks' playoff performance would have blown that number out of the water.

The culmination of their defensive dominance came in Game 6, where the Knicks absolutely dismantled the Hawks. They held Atlanta to just 15 points in the first quarter while pouring in 40 of their own. By the time the final buzzer sounded, New York had secured a resounding 140-89 victory. Whether they face the Boston Celtics or the Philadelphia 76ers in the next round, one thing is clear: Brunson and company have the defensive edge to make a deep run. And for a franchise that hasn't won a title since 1973, that could be the difference between a great season and a historic one.
