In one of the more bizarre subplots of the 2025 Philadelphia Eagles season, cornerback Jaire Alexander was traded to the team but never actually suited up for a single game. Now, in a candid first-person account for The Players' Tribune, Alexander is finally explaining what happened—and it's a story that highlights the physical and emotional toll professional football can take on even the most talented players.
Alexander was expected to make his Eagles debut at Lambeau Field against the Green Bay Packers, the team that drafted him in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft. But instead of taking the field against his former teammates, he didn't even travel with the team. He announced he was stepping away from football, leaving fans and analysts puzzled.
According to Alexander, the trade itself came as a surprise. "Then one afternoon my agent calls me up and tells me that some teams are considering trading for me," he wrote. "A few days later I'm walking into the Eagles facility in Philly."
Despite not having played much recently, Alexander felt physically ready to contribute. "Since I hadn't been suiting up for games at that point, and was practicing less, I was actually feeling pretty good when I came over to the Eagles. And I obviously felt like I needed to prove something. For those first couple days, I mean, let me tell you … I was one of the best DBs out on that practice field."
The matchup against Green Bay added extra motivation—and extra pressure. "I was excited, too, because the Eagles were about to play at Green Bay their next game. It was all systems go."
But as game day approached, Alexander's body started to betray him. "My knee kept swelling up more and more. It's getting worse and worse because of all the reps. And in my head, as much as I'm trying to not think this way, it's like … Here we go again."
The mental battle was just as intense as the physical one. "I was freaking out. I couldn't stop thinking about a potential repeat of what happened in that Bills game. But this time against my former team. In my former home stadium. I mean, I know all those people. So it was even more terrifying."
The team's plan was to drain Alexander's knee the day before the game and then have him play through it. But when he checked the weather forecast and saw it was around seven degrees in Green Bay, the doubts became overwhelming. "I went home the night before we were supposed to be flying out to Green Bay in the morning, and I didn't sleep a wink."
For Eagles fans and football enthusiasts alike, Alexander's story is a sobering reminder that sometimes the biggest battles happen long before kickoff. Whether you're a player fighting through injury or a fan gearing up for game day, having the right gear—and the right mindset—can make all the difference.
