Misiorowski, who entered the game leading the majors in strikeouts, was in peak form, having fanned the last four batters he faced. He had just blown a 98.9 mph fastball past Nationals leadoff hitter James Wood when head athletic trainer Brad Epstein made a mound visit. After a brief conversation with Epstein and manager Pat Murphy, Misiorowski was replaced by reliever Aaron Ashby.

The timing of the injury is especially troubling for Milwaukee. Earlier in the day, the team placed starter Brandon Woodruff on the injured list with shoulder inflammation, thinning out their rotation. But losing Misiorowski, even temporarily, would be a far heavier blow. This season, Misiorowski has racked up 59 strikeouts in 38 innings, solidifying his reputation as one of the game's most dominant young arms. However, the injury casts a shadow over his health.
