As Burnley prepare for a daunting Monday night clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium (kick-off 20:00 BST), interim boss Mike Jackson has been sharing his thoughts on the team's mood, Hannibal Mejbri's fitness, and what it means to "thrive" in the Premier League spotlight.
There's positive news on the injury front, with Jackson revealing that Hannibal Mejbri could be available for the trip to north London. The 23-year-old was withdrawn early during last week's 2-2 draw with Aston Villa as a precaution, but Jackson noted, "We'll make a call closer to the time." He added that the squad is nearly at full strength, with only Connor Roberts sidelined—he'll be gaining match fitness with the under-21s.
Reflecting on the team's morale after securing a hard-fought point against Villa, Jackson admitted the mood was initially buoyant but acknowledged the underlying frustration. "The mood after the game was really good," he said. "But as the week goes on, you still get dips because, ultimately, we've not been what we wanted or set out to achieve. It's the job of the coaching staff to keep the intensity and work towards the games we're in."
Despite Burnley's relegation being confirmed after a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in April, Jackson insists there's still plenty to play for in the remaining two matches. "Let's not beat around the bush—there's going to be players that will leave, people that will stay, and others that will come in. That's just football," he explained. "But every time you get a chance to perform in the Premier League, you go and show what you can do. It's very simple, really. We dress it up too much. When you get that opportunity, do your best and go and perform."
Jackson also touched on the emotional weight of stepping into the role following the departure of his "close friend" Scott Parker, calling it a "privilege" to help the club and players during this transitional period. When asked about his own future, he remained pragmatic: "I had one conversation with the chairman after what happened with Scott. Since then, there's been no communication regarding all that—it's been going on in the background."
With the Emirates set to host what promises to be an intense encounter, all eyes will be on how Burnley channel their resilience and fight for pride in the Premier League's final stretch.
