JJ Watt isn't holding back when it comes to the NFL's growing international footprint. The CBS analyst and former defensive superstar took to social media this week to voice his concerns after the league announced a nine-game international slate for the 2026 season—spanning cities from Melbourne to Munich.

"International game slate is nearing the realm of traveling circus as opposed to occasional showcase," Watt wrote, reigniting a debate that has simmered among players, coaches, and fans for years.

The NFL's push for global expansion has been relentless. The Jacksonville Jaguars have long been the poster child for overseas play, regularly hosting multiple games in London each season. But this year, the San Francisco 49ers are taking it to another level—kicking off Week 1 in Australia and then heading to Mexico City in Week 11. That kind of transcontinental travel is a logistical nightmare, and 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan hasn't been shy about voicing his frustration.

While the league does schedule extra time for travel (the Niners' Week 1 game is on a Friday morning, for example), there's no denying that the toll on players' bodies and routines is far greater than a standard cross-country flight.

Watt's post struck a chord with current players, too. Baltimore Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy chimed in, writing, "It's all they care about in my opinion because it's the biggest growth which means money. YouTube, Amazon, and all the streaming services are global. They going for it all JJ! Will be interesting seeing the game in the future where I'm sure teams will play multiple games overseas."

Since joining the NFL on CBS crew, Watt has become one of the league's most respected voices on player welfare. His simple reminder of what the NFL originally said about international games—that they were meant to be a special showcase, not a regular burden—speaks volumes. As the league continues to chase global revenue streams, the question remains: at what cost to the game itself?
