Ashley Cole won 107 caps for England, seventh on the all‑time list, but says he was "discouraged" by those in the football pyramid from becoming a head coach.

Ashley Cole, one of England's most decorated defenders with 107 caps, has revealed a surprising career twist. While his playing legacy is secure, his path to management hit a roadblock at home. Cole says he felt "discouraged" by the English football system from becoming a head coach, often hearing he lacked the necessary experience.

This perceived lack of opportunity has led him to Italy, where he has embraced a bold new challenge. Cole is now the head coach of Cesena in Serie B, marking his first senior managerial role. For a player who spent the twilight of his career at Roma, it's a return to a country that values tactical nous.

His coaching journey, however, was built in England. After earning his badges under Frank Lampard at Derby County, Cole cut his teeth in Chelsea's academy before serving as an assistant at Everton, Birmingham City, and with the England U21s under Lee Carsley. This apprenticeship spanned nearly seven years, yet the top job remained elusive.

"I was getting kind of discouraged by a lack of opportunities," Cole told BBC Sport. "They like to throw the 'you don't have experience' line. And I'm like, I get what you're saying, I agree - but how am I going to get experience?"

He credits Cesena for taking the "leap of faith" he felt was missing in England, proudly noting the rarity of a black English coach in Italy. On the training ground, Cole is already making an impression, blending English instruction with Italian phrases and showing a hands-on approach that has surprised local staff.

For Cole, this isn't just a job—it's a chance to prove himself and build something special, demonstrating the same determination that defined his legendary playing career.
