For the Hazel Green Trojans, this season feels like destiny fulfilled. After years of building and believing, the program has punched its ticket to the state semifinals for only the third time in school history—and the journey has been nothing short of thrilling.
Under first-year head coach Andrew Dennis, a veteran-laden squad featuring eight seniors has proven its mettle. The Trojans have battled through three consecutive playoff series, each one going the full three games. That grit and resilience have defined a team that refuses to back down.
"Ever since we were little kids, seven or eight of us coming up, we always knew that when we got to high school, this group would be special," senior Andrew Beaverson said. "A winning group that wants to play for each other and wants to win. It's surreal. Every day we get to come to work, and I wouldn't have it any other way."
This marks the first time since the 2022 semifinal squad that Hazel Green has advanced past the opening round. For senior Bryce Zimmerman, the breakthrough was expected. "This year, we knew we had a much better team, and we knew we needed to go farther," he said. "Coach Dennis has done a great job working with us. He's had the mindset all year that we're going to make a deep run. It feels like we're supposed to be here—and we are."
Dennis, who won a state title as a player at Huntsville High in 2011, understands how rare these moments are. "You don't get to do this every year, so when you do get the opportunity, you've got to make the most of it," he said. "These guys have worked incredibly hard to get here, and we don't want to let this moment go to waste."
Standing in their way is Hartselle—a perennial powerhouse and the defending 6A state champions. The Tigers now hold the record for the most state semifinal appearances in Alabama history. But the Trojans are ready for the challenge.
"The atmosphere is going to be electric," Dennis said. "From what I know about Hartselle, they may shut the city down. But I think our people will travel well, and our guys will be ready for the moment. The biggest thing for us is staying focused and playing our game."
For Hazel Green, this isn't just a postseason run—it's the culmination of years of dreams, hard work, and a belief that this team was built for something special. Now, they're just four wins away from a state championship.
