Israel Adesanya's highly anticipated return to the UFC last month didn't go as planned, resulting in his fourth consecutive loss. The former two-time middleweight champion, however, was quick to dismiss any talk of retirement, despite being over a year removed from his last victory.
While Adesanya's fighting spirit remains undimmed, his longtime coach, Eugene Bareman of City Kickboxing, suggests a period of introspection is needed. In a recent interview, Bareman hinted that Adesanya's recent setback against Joe Pyfer may stem more from mental hurdles than a decline in physical skill, noting the fighter shows "glimmers of the old Israel" but struggles to sustain it.
"He just has to do some soul searching, mate," Bareman told Submission Radio. "Every fighter after they lose has to tuck themselves away... and figure life out. That’s just what Israel has to do."
This points to a critical juncture for "The Last Stylebender." The narrative is shifting from pure technique to mindset and preparation. Although he's currently outside the official top-five rankings, Adesanya remains one of the sport's biggest draws and is undoubtedly eyeing a path back to the title. His next move, following this necessary period of reflection, will be one of the most compelling stories to watch in the middleweight division.
