Azzi Fudd's WNBA journey is off to a cautious start, and fans are eager to know: will the Dallas Wings' prized rookie take the court tonight against the Minnesota Lynx?
The No. 1 overall pick made her debut Saturday, logging 18 minutes before a right knee injury put her status in question. Known for her sharpshooting during her standout career at UConn, Fudd entered the league as one of the most anticipated prospects in recent memory. But pairing her with fellow stars Paige Bueckers and Arike Ogunbowale was always going to take time—and this early injury setback hasn't made the transition any smoother.
On Thursday, there was reason for optimism. Fudd participated in the Wings' shootaround at College Park Center, where Dallas will host Olivia Miles and the Lynx at 7 p.m. ET. Head coach Jose Fernandez, however, kept things deliberately vague. "We'll see how tonight goes and how she gets through shootaround, and then see how she feels and what our medical staff says," he told Dallas Hoops Journal.
The timing adds an extra layer of intrigue. If Fudd plays, the matchup becomes a showcase of the top two picks from last month's WNBA draft. Miles, selected second overall by the Lynx, is already generating Rookie of the Year buzz—so a head-to-head battle would be must-watch basketball.
Still, Dallas is clearly playing the long game. Fudd was expected to suit up Tuesday against the Atlanta Dream, only to be downgraded to out just hours before tip-off. That cautious approach reflects a team prioritizing long-term health over short-term gains. And the Wings could really use her shooting: they went just 4-of-26 from beyond the arc in Tuesday's 77-72 loss to the Dream.
For now, Fudd's status remains a game-time decision. But one thing is clear—when she does return, her ability to stretch the floor could be exactly what this Wings offense needs to find its rhythm.
