IPL 2026: Will Mumbai Indians allow Jasprit Bumrah the rest he badly needs?

Jasprit Bumrah is shouldering a heavy workload for Mumbai Indians in the IPL, struggling to deliver wickets while bowling defensively and attacking. Despite MI's dismal performance and Bumrah's fatigue, coach Mahela Jayawardene is reluctant to rest him, citing mathematical possibilities. This approach echoes past decisions that led to Bumrah's injury and significant absences for India.

As the IPL 2026 season unfolds, a pressing question looms over the Mumbai Indians camp: when will Jasprit Bumrah get the rest he desperately needs? The star pacer is shouldering an immense workload, and the cracks are beginning to show.

On Saturday evening, MI once again turned to Bumrah to pull off the near-impossible—defending 160 against Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. He bowled with trademark heart, dismissing the red-hot Sanju Samson and finishing with 1-20 in three overs. But CSK played him cautiously, attacked from the other end, and cruised to victory. It's a story that has repeated itself all season.

Through nine games, Bumrah has already bowled 33 overs at an impressive economy of 8.61—but that number masks a deeper issue. While he holds the line, his teammates have bled runs far more freely. MI expects Bumrah to handle both defensive and attacking duties simultaneously, a heavy ask for a paceman who has been playing continuous cricket since the T20 World Cup. The result? A jaded bowler struggling to deliver wickets when it matters most.

Predictably, some blame has fallen on Bumrah as MI languishes near the bottom of the table, all but out of playoff contention. This raises the obvious question: will the franchise finally give him a break? MI coach Mahela Jayawardene, however, seemed reluctant to entertain the idea during the post-match press conference. "We are not yet out, are we?" he asked, turning to the media manager for confirmation. "It's too early for me to say anything. We still have five more games, anything can happen. We just need to finish positively and see what happens. Mathematically, we're not out yet, so I'm going to fight, and I'm sure the rest of the boys will too."

But perhaps someone should remind the Sri Lankan legend of 2022. That season, MI endured a similarly wretched campaign, winning just four games and finishing last. Yet Bumrah was made to play all 14 matches, bowling 53.2 of his available 56 overs. He took 15 wickets, but the toll was evident—and it ultimately led to a significant injury that sidelined him for India's crucial fixtures. History seems to be repeating itself, and for a bowler of Bumrah's caliber, the risk of burnout is simply too high to ignore.
