IPL 2026: Why Yuzvendra Chahal didn’t bowl vs DC? PBKS coach explains surprise move

Punjab Kings' bowling strategy faced criticism after Yuzvendra Chahal was not utilized in their three-wicket loss to Delhi Capitals. Despite a strong start, PBKS suffered their fourth consecutive defeat, with dropped catches and a strong partnership from Axar Patel and David Miller proving costly. The team's spin-bowling coach cited seaming conditions favoring pacers for Chahal's omission.

The Punjab Kings' bowling strategy raised eyebrows after star spinner Yuzvendra Chahal was surprisingly left unused during their nail-biting three-wicket loss to the Delhi Capitals in IPL 2026. The defeat extended PBKS' losing streak to four matches, a stark contrast to their blistering start of six consecutive wins earlier in the tournament.

Chasing a daunting 211 in Dharamshala, Delhi Capitals found themselves in early trouble at 33/3 and later 74/4. But skipper Axar Patel turned the tide with a explosive 56 off 30 balls, while David Miller anchored the chase with a cool 51 off 28 deliveries. Ashutosh Sharma's rapid 24 off 10 balls and young all-rounder Madhav Tiwari's crucial contributions—2/40 with the ball and an unbeaten 18 off eight balls—kept Delhi in the hunt. The drama peaked when Auqib Nabi sealed the thrilling win with a four and a six, finishing unbeaten on 10 off just two deliveries.

Earlier, Punjab had dominated the powerplay, racing to 51 without loss in just three overs. Priyansh Arya smashed a fearless 56 off 33 balls, including six sixes, but the innings ultimately fell short as Delhi staged a remarkable comeback.

Fielding woes continued to haunt PBKS, with dropped catches proving costly once again. The team has picked up the fewest wickets among all sides this season, a worrying trend for a squad that started so strongly.

Explaining the decision to keep Chahal on the sidelines, Punjab Kings spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule said the conditions dictated the strategy. "There was definitely a thought about bowling the spinners during the time-out, but the ball was seaming and conditions were helping the fast bowlers. The decision was very spontaneous to continue with the pacers and try to pick wickets, which we managed early on. But one partnership just took the game away from us," he explained.

For PBKS fans and fantasy league players alike, the omission of a proven wicket-taker like Chahal raises questions about tactical flexibility—especially on a pitch that eventually offered something for everyone. As the playoffs race heats up, Punjab will need to find the right balance between their pace attack and spin options to turn their season around.
