IPL 2026: RR's Romi Bhinder fined for phone breach; BCCI calls response 'unsatisfactory'

Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder has been fined Rs 1 lakh by the BCCI for breaching match-day regulations by using a mobile phone in the team dugout during an IPL fixture. The Anti-Corruption Unit found his response to a showcause notice unsatisfactory, leading to the penalty and a warning for the first-time offense.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a firm reminder of its strict anti-corruption stance, fining Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder Rs 1 lakh for a breach of match-day regulations during the IPL 2026 season.

The incident occurred during the Royals' clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati on April 10, where Bhinder was seen using a mobile phone inside the team dugout. This is a direct violation of the IPL's strict Players and Match Officials Area (PMOA) protocols, which are designed to safeguard the integrity of the game by preventing unauthorized communication.

Following the breach, the BCCI's Anti-Corruption Unit, led by Sharad Kumar, issued a showcause notice to Bhinder. After reviewing his explanation, the unit deemed his response "unsatisfactory," leading to the financial penalty. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the decision, noting that while it was a first-time offence, a fine and a formal warning were necessary.

These rules are no minor formality. To enter sensitive areas like the dugout, all players and support staff must switch off and deposit their mobile devices with a security liaison officer. The breach, captured on broadcast, showed Bhinder scrolling on his phone near young player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, highlighting the potential risks such lapses can pose.

According to an IPL media advisory, Bhinder has since acknowledged the lapse and issued an unconditional apology. The decisive action underscores the non-negotiable nature of these protocols, ensuring the IPL maintains its reputation as a clean and fiercely competitive tournament where the focus remains squarely on the cricket.
