IPL 2026 | Riyan Parag vape row: Kumar Sangakkara says 'not positive on the team'

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has been fined 25% of his match fee and received one demerit point for using a vape in the dressing room. This incident follows a similar disciplinary breach by the team manager. Head coach Kumar Sangakkara acknowledged the negative reflection on the team and emphasized the importance of responsible behavior and adherence to franchise values.

The Rajasthan Royals have found themselves in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons this IPL season. Captain Riyan Parag has been slapped with a 25% match fee fine and one demerit point after being caught vaping inside the dressing room during Tuesday's clash against Punjab Kings. The incident, which falls under Article 2.21 for "conduct that brings the game into disrepute," has sparked a broader conversation about player discipline and team culture.

Parag accepted the sanction from match referee Amit Sharma without contest. However, the BCCI has hinted at further repercussions, stating they are "exploring other options to initiate proceedings for stringent action against the erring team, its officials and player/s." The board emphasized that protecting the IPL's reputation remains a top priority.

This marks the second disciplinary breach for the Royals in less than two weeks. Earlier, team manager Romi Bhinder was fined ₹1 lakh for using his mobile phone in the team dugout—a clear violation of playing conditions.

Royals head coach Kumar Sangakkara finally addressed the growing concerns, acknowledging the negative impact on the team's image. "It is, of course, a reflection that is not positive on the team when you have a controversy of any kind," Sangakkara said. "Both of those have been addressed by the BCCI and the franchise."

The Sri Lankan legend stressed the importance of maintaining a healthy culture within the squad. "You always try to have a very positive, healthy culture. We have our own values that we adhere to. The constant reminder to the players is to make sure that they are responsible to the franchise and to our culture and our values," he added.

As the Royals aim to steady the ship, these incidents serve as a stark reminder that professional conduct extends beyond the boundary rope—both on and off the field.
