Shashank Singh's fielding struggles have become a growing concern for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in IPL 2026, as the batter dropped yet another crucial catch during the team's 33-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday. This latest lapse—his fifth in just three matches—has intensified scrutiny on the player, who is now at the center of a troubling trend for the franchise.
The costly error occurred at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, where Shashank missed a straightforward chance off Heinrich Klaasen, who was batting on just nine runs at the time. The SRH star made PBKS pay dearly, smashing 69 runs off 43 deliveries and completely shifting the momentum in Hyderabad's favor. For any team in a high-stakes tournament like the IPL, such missed opportunities can be the difference between victory and defeat.
Shashank's fielding issues date back earlier this season. He had already dropped three catches against Lucknow Super Giants—one of which went viral after he badly misjudged a boundary catch attempt—and also put down KL Rahul during a clash with Delhi Capitals. After returning from a hamstring strain that sidelined him for matches against Rajasthan Royals and Gujarat Titans, the struggles have persisted, raising questions about his form and confidence in the field.
Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting didn't shy away from addressing the issue, remarking during the match, "Poor Shashank Singh, it seems the ball is flying everywhere he's going." Captain Shreyas Iyer was equally blunt after the loss, pointing to the dropped chances as a key factor. "It was a bit too much because we dropped catches at the start. The wicket kept getting slower. They played comprehensive cricket and showed us how to win the match. We weren't that comprehensive enough on the field, nor in bowling, nor in batting," Iyer said.
To make matters worse, PBKS's fielding woes extended beyond Shashank, with Cooper Connolly also dropping a catch against SRH. As the IPL season progresses, these lapses could prove costly for a team looking to build momentum. For Shashank, the pressure is mounting to turn things around and prove his value to the squad, both with the bat and in the field.
