Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill didn't hide his relief after his team scraped home in a nail-biting last-over finish against Punjab Kings, admitting the chase was tighter than he'd have liked—but the two points were all that mattered.
Chasing 164 on a sluggish surface, GT found themselves pushed to the limit before clinching a four-wicket victory. The hero of the hour was Sai Sudharsan, whose calm and composed 57 anchored the innings, while Washington Sundar provided the finishing firepower when it mattered most.
"In chases like these, we would have liked to not take it as deep as it went, but two crucial points," Gill said after the match. "This is not the kind of wicket where we'll chase in 15-16 overs." The skipper revealed the team had hoped to finish a couple of overs earlier, but the tricky conditions made that impossible.
Gill emphasized the importance of a set batter going deep on a pitch where timing was a constant challenge. "It's not easy to hit from ball one. Length balls weren't coming on as they do on other wickets. It was important for the batter who is set," he explained. Sudharsan delivered exactly that, before Sundar took over in the tense closing stages. "Luckily we had Washi and he finished the game for us," Gill added.
The Titans captain also shed light on a tactical masterstroke: sending left-handers in succession during the chase. "We just sent the best batter that we thought in that situation," he noted, showcasing the team's flexible approach under pressure.
Earlier, GT's pace attack had laid the foundation. Jason Holder was the standout with outstanding figures of 4/24, while Mohammed Siraj and Kagiso Rabada chipped in with key wickets to reduce PBKS to 47 for five. That early dominance set the stage for a thrilling finish.
With this hard-fought win, Gujarat Titans climbed to 12 points, keeping their playoff hopes firmly alive. More importantly, they proved they can adapt to challenging conditions and close out tight games—a hallmark of champions in the making.
