The Iowa Hawkeyes wrestling program continues to strategically build its roster through the transfer portal, securing a major commitment from former Oklahoma Sooner Carter Schubert. The news, shared by Schubert on social media, signals another significant move for a team looking to reload for the upcoming season.

Schubert brings a compelling blend of experience and upward trajectory to Iowa City. After beginning his collegiate career at California Baptist, he truly found his form at Oklahoma last season, compiling a 21-8 record at 174 pounds. His season was highlighted by a title at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational and a run to the Round of 12 at the NCAA Championships, just one victory shy of All-American honors.

This addition addresses a critical need for the Hawkeyes. Having competed at 157, 165, and 174 pounds, Schubert's versatility is a major asset. He projects as a potential successor at 165 pounds, a weight class left vacant by the departure of standout Michael Caliendo. If he settles comfortably at that weight, he immediately becomes a cornerstone for the lineup.

Schubert's commitment, which comes with at least two years of eligibility, marks the second major portal victory for Head Coach Tom Brands and his staff. He joins former Lehigh star Ryan Crookham, an NCAA All-American who will fill the shoes of the graduated Drake Ayala at 133 pounds. Together, these two transfers plug the most glaring holes in Iowa's lineup for the 2026-27 campaign.

While the Hawkeyes may still explore other options in a busy transfer portal, securing talents of Schubert and Crookham's caliber represents a hugely successful start to the offseason. The message is clear: Iowa is aggressively assembling a roster capable of contending for national titles, and the wrestling world is taking notice.
