Fran McCaffery's tenure as head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes men's basketball team came to an end in 2025 after a disappointing 17–16 season—his worst record since 2018. After 15 years at the helm, the on-court results were declining, but according to recent reports, the drama behind the scenes was equally turbulent.
On a recent episode of Legends & Listeners, reporter Scott Dochterman revealed that McCaffery and his wife, Margaret, were notoriously difficult toward media members in the final years of his tenure. The treatment reportedly targeted even the most beloved figures in Iowa sports, including Gary Dolphin, the longtime play-by-play voice for both Hawkeye football and men's basketball on the Iowa Hawkeye Sports Network.
"Gary Dolphin had it the worst… [McCaffery] tried to force him out twice," Dochterman shared, painting a picture of a hostile environment.
One particularly shocking incident occurred when Dolphin simply asked a player about turning around a losing streak. According to Dochterman, Margaret McCaffery "came unglued, F-bombed him, screamed at him to the point where the leadership of both Iowa and Learfield had to be called in." The tension escalated to the point where she would shout, "I don't need to be babysat!"—all while being asked to stop yelling at the very voice of the Hawkeyes.
This isn't the first time the McCafferys' mistreatment of the media has come to light. Earlier this week, WHO-TV sportscaster Keith Murphy shared his own experience on Murphy & Andy. He recounted a story from the annual Coaches Versus Cancer event, where the McCafferys were upset about Murphy's coverage of Fran's contract extension. The situation became so tense that Fran McCaffery insisted the event's emcee be removed—or he would no longer attend.
To make matters worse, Margaret McCaffery reportedly heckled Murphy while he was speaking at the event. For a program with such a rich history and passionate fan base, these revelations add a sobering layer to the end of an era in Iowa City. As the Hawkeyes look ahead to a new chapter, it's clear that the drama extended far beyond the court.
