The Iowa Hawkeyes football program has been hit with NCAA sanctions, including the vacating of wins, following an investigation into impermissible recruiting contact during the 2022 transfer portal cycle. The NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions announced the decision this week, marking a significant setback for the program.

The committee found that head coach Kirk Ferentz and assistant coach Jon Budmayr made improper contact with a student-athlete before he had officially entered the transfer portal in November 2022. While not named in the NCAA release, reports indicate the investigation centered on the recruitment of quarterback Cade McNamara, who ultimately transferred from Michigan to Iowa.

The violations stem from a series of 13 phone calls and two text messages initiated by Budmayr with the athlete and his father. Budmayr, who had a prior recruiting relationship with McNamara from his time at Wisconsin, also arranged a phone call between the player and Coach Ferentz, who allegedly assured him of a spot on the team. The athlete entered the portal and committed to Iowa shortly after these contacts.

As a result, the NCAA has classified this as a Level II-Mitigated violation. The penalties mandate that Coach Ferentz vacate four wins from the 2023 season from his official record and place the football program on a one-year probation. This ruling underscores the NCAA's ongoing scrutiny of transfer portal tampering, a hot-button issue in modern college athletics where early contact is a persistent challenge.

For the Hawkeyes, the sanctions are a stark reminder of the tightrope programs walk in the competitive transfer market.
