The Iowa Hawkeyes, a team not known for prowling in the transfer portal, went into the talent pool this year and came away with a big-time addition on the defensive line. Iowa brought in Kahmari Brown, a transfer from Elon, to bolster the depth and talent up front.
Joining a new program requires the learning curve of a new scheme, responsibilities within that scheme, and learning how to play with new players. Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker elaborated on how Brown is adapting to Iowa's scheme in spring practice.
"Well, it's hard for everyone. Going back to the safeties, when you come in and are learning the different language basically, football is football. I get that, but what we're asking our guys compared to what they were asking him, probably has to be a little bit of difference. We're a little bit heavier. There's a little bit more understanding how to take on blocks and stuff like that.
"He has been an asset. He is improving. Is he where we want him? No, nobody is right now. You have to keep working. It's a long project. By the time we get to September or whenever we play the first game, hopefully all these guys have a chance to get in there, but he's done a good job," Parker said of the expectations for Brown.
At 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, the Jacksonville, North Carolina native looks the part of an elite pass rusher and edge player on a Big Ten defense. Kahmari Brown proved that he has the talent as well.
In his sophomore season at Elon, Brown tallied 66 tackles and added a whopping 12 sacks to go with three forced fumbles. A Second-Team All-American last year, Kahmari Brown joins an Iowa defensive line group that is looking for production to replace the departures of Max Llewellyn, Ethan Hurkett, and Aaron Graves.
