Inter Milan are already looking ahead, with Atalanta winger Marco Palestra emerging as a top candidate to replace Denzel Dumfries if the Dutch international makes a summer move. The 27-year-old's future hinges on a combination of his World Cup performances and a €25 million release clause that will be active for just one month in July.

According to reports from Gazzetta dello Sport, Dumfries has rediscovered his best form at a pivotal moment. After missing three months with a left ankle injury sustained against Lazio in November, he returned in February and quickly re-established himself as a key figure in Cristian Chivu's starting lineup. His contributions have been decisive in both the Scudetto race and the Coppa Italia final victory over Lazio, reminding everyone why Inter value him so highly.

Despite his importance, Dumfries's contract situation creates an annual window of uncertainty. While his deal runs until 2028 and Inter consider him a core asset, the release clause has attracted interest from Liverpool, who have been linked with activating it. Last summer, no club made a concrete move despite persistent rumors of a switch to Barcelona.

The World Cup will be a defining moment for Dumfries. He'll represent the Netherlands against Japan, Sweden, and Tunisia in the group stage—a group the Dutch are heavily favored to advance from. While he's on international duty in the United States, the transfer market will continue to buzz around his name.

Should a departure materialize, Inter have already identified Marco Palestra as their primary target for the right flank. Currently on loan at Cagliari from Atalanta, the 21-year-old has impressed with his dynamism and versatility. With Luis Henrique linked to an exit and Matteo Darmian's contract expiring in June after six trophy-laden years, Palestra represents the natural long-term successor to fill Dumfries's role in the Nerazzurri setup.
