When you carry a name like Warner in NFL circles, eyes tend to follow. And for Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, that meant taking a very close look at E.J. Warner — the son of Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner — during the team's recent rookie minicamp.

According to NFL insider Mike Garafolo, Reid got an up-close evaluation of the younger Warner as part of a weekend tryout with the Chiefs. It was a savvy move for a team that has already made significant investments in its quarterback room this offseason.

Kansas City has been busy building depth behind superstar Patrick Mahomes. Earlier this offseason, the Chiefs traded for veteran signal-caller Justin Fields, formerly of the Chicago Bears and New York Jets. Then, in the 2026 NFL Draft, the front office selected LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier with the 249th overall pick.

But general manager Brett Veach wasn't done. Looking to add even more competition and talent, he invited several quarterbacks to rookie camp — with Warner standing out as the most notable name. The Fresno State product showed off the arm and football IQ that made his father a two-time NFL MVP and Super Bowl champion.

Despite the strong showing, Warner didn't land a contract with Kansas City. Instead, he's heading west to participate in the Denver Broncos' offseason program, where head coach Sean Payton will get his own close look at the next generation of the Warner legacy.

For Chiefs fans, it's a reminder that even when you have Mahomes under center, the pursuit of quality depth never stops. And for Warner, it's just another step in carving out his own NFL story.
