Football rivalries don't get much bigger than Al Nassr versus Al Hilal. These two Saudi Arabian giants are set to clash in one of the most anticipated matches in recent Pro League history, but the real game-changer is happening off the pitch—a brand-new stadium that's literally built on the edge of a cliff.

Come Tuesday, May 12, all eyes will be on Cristiano Ronaldo's Al Nassr as they face their fierce Riyadh rivals, Al Hilal, led by Karim Benzema. For Ronaldo, this isn't just another derby—it's a shot at his first league title since his blockbuster move to Saudi Arabia in 2023. A win in what will be the team's second-to-last match of the season could seal the championship and etch his name deeper into the Kingdom's football history.

The Riyadh Derby has always been one of the most intense rivalries in Asian football, carrying deep cultural significance across Saudi Arabia. But soon, this clash of titans will unfold in a setting unlike anything the sport has ever seen.

Enter the Prince Mohammed bin Salman Stadium, rising from the upper plateau of Qiddiya City—a vibrant, brand-new metropolis being built from the ground up, just 45 kilometers southwest of central Riyadh. Designed to blend entertainment, sports, and culture under one roof, Qiddiya City will eventually be home to over 500,000 residents. And here's the twist: both Al Nassr and Al Hilal will call this city their home. When construction is complete, the derby will never look or feel the same again.

The numbers are jaw-dropping. The stadium will hold 45,000 fans, expandable to 58,500 for concerts and combat sports events. It towers 170 meters from the lower plateau to its summit and sits perched over a 200-meter cliff. But the real innovation? It's the world's first venue to combine a retractable roof, a retractable pitch, and a retractable west facade—all in one breathtaking structure.

"We went through 37 different designs," said Barry Bremner, Senior Executive Director of Sports Strategy at Qiddiya Investment Company. "The brief from His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was that it had to reflect the DNA of Qiddiya City—the world's first city built for the future of sport and entertainment."

For fans of the beautiful game, this isn't just a new stadium. It's a glimpse into the future of football itself.
