It's not often you'll catch Curt Cignetti daydreaming about destiny. The Indiana football head coach is known for keeping his focus locked on the present, one practice at a time. But after the Hoosiers' jaw-dropping victory over Penn State last season, even he couldn't help but wonder if something special was unfolding.
The scene was set in Happy Valley, where Indiana had built a 13-point lead in the third quarter, only to watch it slip away. By the final minutes, the Hoosiers trailed by four, and the Nittany Lions—playing with renewed energy after a coaching change—seemed to have all the momentum. "I knew it was going to be a tough game," Cignetti recalled to college football analyst Josh Pate. "We had an opportunity to distance ourselves in the third quarter and didn't get it done. Then they took over."
But with 1:51 left on the clock and the ball at their own 20-yard line, something clicked. "Those 11 guys in the huddle, they just morphed into something else," Cignetti said. Quarterback Fernando Mendoza got sacked on the first play, but the Hoosiers didn't flinch. A 22-yard completion, followed by strikes of 12, 29, and 17 yards, marched them all the way to the Penn State 7-yard line with 48 seconds remaining. After two incompletions, Mendoza found Omar Cooper Jr. in the back of the end zone, where the receiver barely dragged a toe in bounds for the game-winning score. "Cooper makes just an unbelievable catch," Cignetti said.
As Cignetti walked across the field to shake the interim coach's hand, the gravity of the moment hit him. "It kind of hit me like, 'Wow, this might be a team of destiny here.' I'm not one to think too far ahead," he admitted. "At that moment, I'm thinking, 'Hmm. Who knows here?' But there were a lot of wars to fight after that."
That war—and that win—propelled the Hoosiers on an undefeated run to a national championship, proving that sometimes, even the most disciplined minds can't ignore the magic of a single, unforgettable drive.
