The Pittsburgh Steelers have spent the entire offseason in a state of limbo, waiting for Aaron Rodgers to decide his future. After leading the franchise to an AFC North title in his first season, the veteran quarterback is reportedly leaning toward running it back. According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Rodgers plans to meet with the team this weekend with the intention of returning for the 2026 season.

On paper, that sounds like great news for a team that just won its division. But peel back the layers, and this decision could be a costly misstep for a franchise that needs to think long-term.

Rodgers may keep the Steelers competitive, but competitive isn't the same as contending. Even with his experience and leadership, it's hard to see this roster as a legitimate Super Bowl threat. The risk? Pittsburgh ends up in NFL purgatory—too good to land a top pick in the 2027 draft, which is widely considered one of the deepest quarterback classes in years, but not good enough to make a serious playoff run.

This puts the Steelers in a familiar but uncomfortable spot: stuck in the middle. By sticking with Rodgers, the team also delays evaluating its younger quarterbacks, Will Howard and Drew Allar. For a franchise that should be planning for the future, this feels like an incredible lack of foresight. Sometimes the smartest move isn't the most obvious one.
