The Iowa Hawkeyes have secured a promising backcourt addition for the future. Illinois State transfer Ty'Reek Coleman announced his commitment to Iowa basketball, bringing his dynamic scoring ability to Iowa City.
As a true freshman for the Redbirds, the 6-foot-2 guard made an immediate impact, averaging 10 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in just over 23 minutes per game. He started 19 of his 35 appearances, scoring in double figures 15 times and showcasing his potential with a career-high 24-point outing against Cornell.
What makes Coleman an exciting pickup is his exceptional efficiency for a young player. He shot an impressive 50.4% from the field and 41.6% from three-point range last season. While he didn't launch a high volume of threes, his ability to score from deep adds a valuable dimension to his game. Coleman also excels at getting to the rim, finishing at a 55.7% clip on two-point attempts thanks to his elusiveness and downhill attacking style.
Like many freshmen, there are areas for growth, such as his assist-to-turnover ratio and free-throw shooting (70.2%). However, his foundational shooting numbers suggest significant upside. With three seasons of eligibility remaining, Coleman has ample time to develop under Coach Fran McCaffery and could become a key piece for the Hawkeyes as they look to build a competitive roster in the Big Ten.
