Tech3 Racing is reportedly considering switching from KTM power to Honda power for the 2027 MotoGP season. If that occurs, can KTM survive and continue in the racing series?

The MotoGP paddock is buzzing with a question that could reshape the grid: Is Tech3 Racing preparing to ditch KTM for Honda power in 2027? And if so, what does that mean for KTM's future in the sport?

Since KTM's insolvency declaration and subsequent rescue, the burning question has been whether the Austrian manufacturer will stay in MotoGP. Despite repeated attempts to get answers from KTM, MotoGP officials, and even new parent company Bajaj, the silence has been deafening. Early statements from KTM's insolvency managers suggested the brand would exit the top-tier series—a point they reconfirmed to RideApart when pressed.

But fast-forward several months into the 2026 season, and the picture looks very different. KTM is actively teasing and testing its entry for the upcoming 2027 rule changes, complete with a new 850cc engine. On the surface, it seems like the brand is digging in for the long haul.

Enter the rumor that could change everything. Tech3 Racing, KTM's sister team and sole engine client, is reportedly in talks to switch powerplants next year—and the rumored supplier is none other than Honda. If true, this would leave KTM without a satellite team, a critical component for development and grid presence in MotoGP.

"Behind the scenes, every manufacturer has been conducting negotiations with its independent team," Tech3 team manager Nicolas Goyon told Motorsport. "For teams such as, for example, VR46, nothing has been officially announced, but everything is already clear on their side: they will continue with Ducati."

Then came the kicker. "If you pay attention, I think every team has clarified the situation. The only team still in talks is us. It's true, Guenther [Steiner] is also talking to Honda."

With Steiner—the former Haas F1 team principal now involved with Tech3—reportedly holding discussions with Honda, the writing may be on the wall. For KTM, losing its only customer team would be a massive blow, potentially isolating the manufacturer in the paddock and raising serious doubts about its long-term commitment to MotoGP.

As the 2027 season approaches, all eyes are on Tech3's decision. Will KTM survive as a standalone entity, or is this the beginning of the end for the Austrian brand in the world's premier motorcycle racing series? Stay tuned—the next few months could define the future of MotoGP's grid.
