'I've eclipsed golden period' - why Fitzpatrick is in US PGA frame

Matt Fitzpatrick's recent form puts him among the favourites to end a 107-year wait for an English winner at this week's US PGA Championship in Pennsylvania.

Matt Fitzpatrick is making waves ahead of the US PGA Championship at Aronimink this week, and he's not just hoping to win—he's aiming to make history. The last Englishman to claim this title was Jim Barnes, who won the inaugural tournament in 1916 and repeated in 1919. That's a 107-year wait for a champion from England, and Fitzpatrick, a 31-year-old from Sheffield, believes he's the man to end it.

Why the confidence? Fitzpatrick's recent form is nothing short of spectacular. With three wins in his last five starts and over $10.5 million already pocketed this season, he's enjoying the best start to a PGA Tour campaign of his career. Only Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Cameron Young sit above him in the world rankings, and Fitzpatrick feels his game is even sharper than when he won the US Open in 2022.

"I thought 2022 was my golden period," Fitzpatrick says. "But the start of this year has definitely eclipsed that. The results and the underlying numbers are better. I'm trying to cherish it as much as possible—it's all happening very quickly."

His season highlights include a runner-up finish at The Players Championship in March, followed by a win at the Valspar Championship. He then impressed at the Masters with a strong showing before defeating Scheffler in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage. Most recently, he teamed up with his brother Alex to triumph at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

This is a far cry from 12 months ago, when Fitzpatrick arrived at Quail Hollow for the 2025 PGA Championship without a single top-20 finish that season and ranked 85th in the world. Now, he's inside the top five and climbing. A quick glance at his stats reveals why: he's in the top tier of nearly every key metric, from driving accuracy to scoring average.

As Fitzpatrick tees off on Thursday, golf fans will be watching closely. Can he break that century-long drought and add a second major to his resume? If his current form is any indication, he's more than ready for the challenge.
