Jonathan Haggerty proved once again why he’s among the sharpest minds in combat sports, delivering a tactical masterclass at ONE SAMURAI 1. This past Wednesday, April 29, at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, “The General” successfully defended his ONE Bantamweight Kickboxing World Championship with a unanimous decision victory over Japanese standout Yuki Yoza.

Yoza entered the bout riding a staggering 13-fight winning streak, armed with devastating Kyokushin karate-style leg kicks that had dismantled opponents. But Haggerty, a two-division Muay Thai World Champion, leaned on his veteran experience and elite fight IQ to weather the storm. The Londoner used brilliant footwork, a piston-like jab, and sharp teeps to control distance, neutralizing Yoza’s unorthodox attacks while systematically outpointing the challenger over five grueling rounds.

Speaking at the post-event press conference, Haggerty admitted Yoza’s kicks took a heavy toll but praised his own discipline under pressure. “My legs are killing me, but yeah, it was a great fight. Yoza brought the fire. We knew he would. I’m just so grateful to be here, competing in the best organization in the world,” he said. “It was a great fight.”

Known for explosive knockouts, Haggerty relied on a sound game plan crafted with his team at Knowlesy Academy. He switched stances constantly to minimize damage from Yoza’s leg kicks and disrupt the Japanese fighter’s rhythm. “We had a great game plan,” Haggerty added. “I stuck to it, and it paid off.”

With this victory, “The General” not only derailed Yoza’s rise but also solidified his status as one of the pound-for-pound best strikers on the planet. Looking ahead, Haggerty has his sights set on reclaiming Muay Thai gold and even venturing into MMA. For fans of elite striking and tactical warfare, this performance was a reminder that experience and fight IQ can overcome any wave of momentum.
