Brentford Under-18s capped off their Professional Development League campaign in style, delivering a commanding 3-0 victory over Hull City Under-18s at Bishop Burton College on Saturday. The young Bees put on an impressive display in sunny conditions, with standout performances from rising stars Jai Nwosu and Jovan Kasujja.
The match got off to a promising start for Gary McDermott's side, who dominated possession and applied early pressure in Hull's half during the opening 10 minutes. However, it was the hosts who nearly struck first on 15 minutes, when George Akinniranye met a dangerous cross from the right but saw his effort brilliantly denied by Brentford goalkeeper Felix Lyon from close range, with the shot-stopper quickly recovering to punch away the rebound.
Brentford responded with a flurry of chances. On 22 minutes, Jai Bansoodeb's clever through ball sent Domeiro Bobb-Semple racing down the left side of the box, but his shot was straight at Hull goalkeeper Jake Hopper. The pressure intensified moments later when Coran Madden picked out Nedved Owusu on the right, but his powerful strike was kept out, and Owusu's follow-up header was also thwarted by Hopper.
Owusu was proving a constant threat, and a minute later he showcased his individual brilliance by beating his marker to create a clear sight of goal, only to see his shot curl just wide of the far post. At the other end, Hull looked dangerous on the counterattack through Emmanuel Sarpong, but Under-16 defender Harry Biggs was alert to clear the danger.
The breakthrough finally came on 34 minutes through Jai Nwosu, the Under-16 striker showing composure beyond his years. Nathaniel Ogungbemi's long throw from the left caused chaos in the box, and Nwosu was in the right place to pounce, giving Brentford a deserved 1-0 lead heading into the break.
The second half saw Brentford continue to control proceedings, and their patience was rewarded late on. Jovan Kasujja doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish, before Nwosu completed his brace to seal an emphatic victory and end the season on a high note. For the young Bees, this performance signals exciting things to come as they build toward the next campaign.
