Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic couldn't hide his pride after his team clinched the final Championship play-off spot in dramatic fashion. The Tigers' 2-1 victory over Norwich, powered by a brace from Oli McBurnie, proved decisive as both Wrexham and Derby County stumbled on the final day.
Speaking to BBC Sport, the visibly emotional Jakirovic reflected on a nail-biting afternoon that saw his side's fate hang in the balance until the final whistle. "It's a great feeling, especially after 90 or 96 minutes," he said. "We saw Wrexham didn't beat Middlesbrough, and it was enough to win 2-1. It is emotional for us because we have achieved something our chairman has dreamt about."
The victory capped a remarkable turnaround for Hull, who found themselves as low as eighth place just 15 minutes into the match. Jakirovic praised his squad's resilience, highlighting the mental fortitude that has become their trademark this season. "For the lads, I'm very proud of them because they have shown a great mentality," he added.
The manager's own journey mirrors that of his team—never content with comfort zones. "In my life, I've been out of the comfort zone. I don't like being in the comfort zone. You have to chase your dreams, your ambitions when you want to be successful," Jakirovic explained. "It was not easy to play this game as we needed a win. But OK, this is football, everything is possible, and we gave everything to win this game. Mission complete."
With momentum on their side and a never-say-die attitude, Hull City now turn their attention to the play-offs, where they'll look to continue their dream season and secure promotion to the Premier League.
