Hardly anyone was talking about Charlton being WSL 2 title contenders before the season began - but they go into the final day top.

When the Women's Super League 2 season kicked off, few had Charlton Athletic on their radar as serious title contenders. But as the final matchday arrives, the Addicks sit atop the table, defying expectations and budgets alike.

Manager Karen Hills describes a potential promotion as "one of the greatest achievements of her career"—and for good reason. With one of the league's smallest budgets, Charlton have battled against big-spending rivals like Newcastle United and Birmingham City, as well as a formidable Crystal Palace side. Yet here they are: 42 points, top of the table, with everything on the line.

The stakes couldn't be higher. Charlton face Birmingham City on Saturday, 2 May at 15:00 BST in a winner-takes-all clash. At the same time, Crystal Palace take on relegated Portsmouth. With the WSL expanding from 12 to 14 teams next season, the top two in WSL 2 earn automatic promotion, while the third-place team faces a play-off against bottom-of-the-table WSL side Leicester on 23 May.

Charlton have led the pack for most of the campaign, but recent form has been shaky—three defeats in their last four matches have tightened the race. Still, Hills remains confident in her squad. "If you'd have told me in pre-season this is where we would be, I'd have bitten your hand off," she told BBC Sport. "These players deserve to be where they are. The amount of work they've put in, the way they've played—they deserve all the accolades."

Hills knows what it takes to reach the top flight. She previously guided Tottenham to the WSL for the first time in their history in 2019, alongside coach Juan Carlos Amoros. Now, she's building something special at Charlton, rooted in strong foundations, consistency, and a formidable spirit. Whether they cross the finish line first or not, this team has already proven that heart and grit can compete with the biggest budgets in the game.
