When the Women's Super League 2 season kicked off, hardly anyone had Charlton Athletic on their radar as title contenders. Yet here they are, sitting top of the table with just one game to play—and manager Karen Hills is daring to dream of what she calls "one of the greatest achievements of her career."
It's been a season of defying expectations for the Addicks. With one of the smallest budgets in the league, they've gone toe-to-toe—and often come out on top—against big spenders like Newcastle United, Birmingham City, and Crystal Palace. After a stunning 27-game unbeaten run that stretched into March, Charlton have 42 points, holding a slender one-point lead over both Birmingham and Palace heading into the final day.
The stakes couldn't be higher. With the WSL expanding from 12 to 14 teams next season, the top two in WSL 2 will earn automatic promotion. The third-place team will face a play-off against bottom-of-the-table WSL side Leicester on May 23. For Charlton, it all comes down to a massive showdown against Birmingham on Saturday, May 2 at 15:00 BST, while Palace take on already-relegated Portsmouth at the same time.
But the path hasn't been smooth. Charlton's form has wobbled at the worst possible time, with three defeats in their last four matches. Still, Hills is full of pride for her squad. "If you'd have told me in pre-season this is where we would be, I'd have bitten your hand off," she said. "These players deserve to be where they are. The amount of work they've put in, the way they've played—they deserve all the accolades."
For Hills, who previously guided Tottenham to the WSL for the first time, leading this underdog story to the finish line would be something special. "Just in terms of where the league is at this moment, what other teams have spent and the calibre of players," she reflected. "I think it would be an unbelievable achievement."
As the final whistle approaches, Charlton are proving that heart, grit, and belief can still compete with the biggest budgets. Whether they seal promotion or not, this is a team that has already won something priceless: respect.
