"The draft is going to be a very bright spotlight on the North Shore, on the city, the region," Rooney noted, anticipating an influx of visitors drawn by the sport's history.

The city is rich with living history, as Anne Madarasz, Chief Historian at the Franco Harris Sports Museum, points out: "There’s so much history in this region and it’s living kind of on the streets and in the neighborhoods."

To help fans connect with that past, the Heinz History Center is promoting Pittsburgh’s Sports Heritage Trail. This journey invites you to walk in the footsteps of giants, from the Immaculate Reception Monument on the North Shore to the preserved Forbes Field wall in Oakland. "Start your visit here if you wanna learn about sports history," Madarasz suggests, "and then there’s so much all around the area to do."

The celebration extends beyond city limits, encouraging pilgrimages to the hometowns of iconic figures like Joe Namath in Beaver Falls and Mike Ditka in Carnegie. This is a tribute to the region's staggering production of talent. Consider this: more than 900 Western Pennsylvania high school athletes have gone on to play at least one professional game—meaning roughly one in every 23 NFL players has roots in this fertile football ground.

It’s a legacy that resonates nationwide. Mention the WPIAL (Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League) to any football fan, and you’ll instantly conjure images of hard-nosed, fundamentally sound players.
