Minnesota Timberwolves star guard Anthony Edwards has been dealing with a troublesome "runner's knee" injury for a little over a month now. The good news here is that Edwards will continue trying to play on it as his Timberwolves take on the rival Denver Nuggets on the road in Monday night's Game 2 of the two teams' first-round NBA playoff series. He is officially listed as questionable for the matchup as he manages the injury.
The bad news is that Edwards' injury does not appear to have a chance to meaningfully improve unless he gets extended rest. If anything, it seems to be one of those situations where pain and swelling can worsen the more he plays on it, unless he gets a chance for a full recovery. We saw an example of this in Edwards' play as he shot just 7-of-19 from the field in Game 1's loss to Denver. On a consistent basis, he clearly did not have his same trademark explosiveness.
Obviously, in the middle of a playoff series, Edwards is not positioned to get any extended rest anytime soon. His decision seems to be either to play through any lingering discomfort or to sit out, with no in-between. Gulp.
Notably, Timberwolves coach Chris Finch downplayed the impact of Edwards' injury on his play in Game 1. Finch attributed Edwards' struggles more to his not being in a good, comfortable playing rhythm after missing 11 of the Timberwolves' last 15 games:
Chris Finch on how Anthony Edwards looked in Game 1:“Normal for what he’s been through.”“It wasn’t the Ant we’re used to seeing, but pretty much as expected given where he is with trying to find his rhythm.” pic.twitter.com/TMnCMhWbiZ
We'll see how Edwards looks and fares as the Timberwolves try to get back on track against the Nuggets on Monday night.
