How McCann steered Killie to Premiership safety

When Neil McCann swapped punditry for the Kilmarnock hotseat in January there was a mixed reaction from supporters. At the time of his Rugby Park appointment, Killie had not won in 14 games and were second bottom of the table. McCann was appointed Kilmarnock head coach on 6 January on a contract running until the summer of 2028 with the club second bottom of the Scottish Premiership.

When Neil McCann traded the pundit's chair for the Kilmarnock hotseat back in January, the reaction from the stands was anything but unanimous. Some fans worried whether the former Dundee boss could truly "walk the walk" after a previous stint that saw just 20 wins in 60 games. Fast forward to the present, and McCann has silenced those doubters in emphatic style.

At the time of his appointment on January 6th—with a contract running through summer 2028—Killie were in deep trouble. They hadn't won in 14 matches, sat second bottom of the Scottish Premiership, and were just four points above Livingston. The Ayrshire side looked destined for a relegation scrap. But under McCann's guidance, the narrative has flipped completely.

With a game to spare, Kilmarnock have secured their Premiership status, and the numbers tell a remarkable story. The gap to Livingston has ballooned from four points to 16, while St Mirren in 10th place are now four points behind. McCann's side could even climb to ninth depending on final day results.

The transformation has been built on an extraordinary home record. McCann has won six of his eight matches at Rugby Park, becoming the first Killie head coach in the 21st century to achieve that feat in his first eight top-flight home games. Tuesday night's 3-1 victory over Dundee was the latest statement of intent.

Since McCann took charge, Kilmarnock sit fourth in the Premiership form table—trailing only Hearts, Celtic, and Rangers. In 16 league games, they've collected 24 points, two more than top-six sides Motherwell and Falkirk. Only the title chasers have won more games (six) or scored more goals (27) during that period.

With a points-per-game rate of 1.50, McCann has already matched some of the best recent managerial performances in the league. The question now is just how high this revitalized Kilmarnock side can climb next season.
