After months of anticipation, the University of Louisville and Cardinals head coach Jeff Brohm have agreed to a contract extension.

Brohm was approved for a new eight-year deal with a total salary value of $64.8 million during Thursday's UofL Athletic Association Board of Directors special meeting. That includes annual retention payments that start at $250,000 for 2026, go to $750,000 in 2027 and jump up to $1 million for the following five years. Brohm's initial contract, which was for six years, was set to expire in 2030 after he received two automatic extensions for winning 10 games during the 2023 season and nine contests in 2024.

Here's a look at Brohm's contract extension and how it compares to other coaches in the ACC and nationally:

Jeff Brohm is set to make $64.8 million, according to his new contract. His proposed salary will increase to $6.55 million for 2026, then jump up to $7.95 million next year. He's set to make $8.3 million in 2028, with his salary increasing by $100,000 over the following four years before dropping down to $7.8 million in 2033.

Upon his signing in December 2022, Brohm agreed to a six-year deal with a base salary of $5 million. That amount was set to increase by $100,000 every year through 2028. After earning two automatic contract extensions for winning 10 games in 2023 and nine in 2024, Brohm's base salary increased to $6.5 million in 2029 and $7 million in 2030.

According to the USA TODAY college football coach salary database from October, Brohm made just under $6 million in total pay, which ranked 43rd nationally and sixth in the ACC. Based on current numbers, Brohm moving up to $6.55 million puts him at 38th in the country and fifth in the conference.

If Brohm is fired before Dec. 31, 2029, the university will owe him 90% of his total remaining salary. UofL will then owe Brohm 100% of his remaining salary if he's fired after that day but before his contract is up on Dec. 31, 2033.

If Brohm leaves Louisville before Dec. 31, 2027, he'll owe the school $3 million. Anything after that but before his contract expires will cost him $1 million.
