With the Illini season officially over after a loss in the Final Four, what’s next?

The sting of a Final Four loss is still fresh, but in Champaign, the page has already turned. The Illinois Fighting Illini are wasting no time building for the 2026-27 season, aiming to turn this year's historic run into a sustainable championship contender.

With the departure of key seniors Kylan Boswell, Ben Humrichous, and AJ Redd, plus the expected NBA exit of star guard Keaton Wagler, the Illini have significant production to replace. Wagler's team-leading 17.9 points and 4.2 assists per game, combined with the graduating trio's contributions, leave a major void on both ends of the floor.

Head coach Brad Underwood's task is clear: reload the roster. The transfer portal departures of Mihailo Petrovic and Toni Bilic further highlight the need for backcourt reinforcements. The good news is a promising core is set to return, including starters Jake Davis, Tomislav Ivišić, and David Mirković, alongside key bench players like Zvonimir Ivišić and Andrej Stojaković.

The foundation for the future is already being laid with a strong incoming high school class. The headliner is Quintin Coleman, a smooth 6-foot-4 shooting guard who recently flipped his commitment from Wake Forest to Illinois. A top-40 national prospect known for his effortless, deep-range shooting, Coleman could be an immediate offensive weapon.

Perhaps the most fascinating wild card is Naz Rankin. The Morgan Park standout, already signed to play football for the Illini, has expressed a desire to also play basketball. His explosive scoring ability—averaging over 23 points per game in high school—makes him a tantalizing two-sport possibility.

While the Final Four journey was unforgettable, the work to build the next great Illinois team is already underway. For Illini fans, the offseason promises to be as compelling as the regular season, filled with new faces and the hope of another deep March run.
