Clemson baseball coach Erik Bakich moved Aidan Knaak from a Game 1 starter to a Game 3 one. Here's why Bakich's decided to make the change.

Sometimes, the boldest moves yield the biggest rewards. That was certainly the case for Clemson baseball head coach Erik Bakich, who made a daring decision with his starting rotation that paid off in a big way.

In a season where the Tigers have struggled to find consistency—sitting at 28-20 overall and 8-16 in ACC play, with their NCAA Tournament hopes hanging by a thread—Bakich decided to shake things up. He moved ace pitcher Aidan Knaak from his usual Game 1 starting role to Game 3, swapping places with Dane Moehler. It was the first time since Knaak's freshman year in 2024 that he hadn't opened a series on the mound.

The gamble was a calculated one. Clemson had lost six conference series and was desperate for a spark. With the Tigers facing No. 19 Boston College at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on May 3, Bakich's plan was put to the test—and it worked.

Knaak delivered a stellar performance, helping Clemson secure a 4-3 victory in the series finale. The win marked the Tigers' second ACC series victory of the season and their first at home, coming after dropping the opener.

"We shuffled some things up, and it worked," Bakich said after the game. "That's what we were hoping for. It's one thing to have a plan. It's another thing to execute it, and today, (Knaak) looked good."

For a team fighting to stay relevant in the postseason conversation, this kind of strategic thinking could be exactly what Clemson needs to turn its season around. Sometimes, a fresh look at the rotation is all it takes to get back on track. And for Tigers fans, this series win might just be the spark they've been waiting for.
