The Houston Texans' 2025 season showed progress, winning two more games than the previous year, but it ended in familiar fashion. After securing a Wild Card victory, their playoff run was halted once again in the Divisional Round by the eventual AFC Super Bowl representative.

Determined to break through that ceiling, General Manager Nick Caserio and the front office have been aggressively addressing roster needs. Their offseason moves have included bolstering the offensive line in free agency and executing trades, such as acquiring running back David Montgomery.

The latest move shifts focus to the defensive side of the ball for head coach DeMeco Ryans. Just as the New England Patriots were preparing to release linebacker Marte Mapu, the Texans swooped in with a trade offer.

Houston will send a 2027 sixth-round draft pick to New England in exchange for Mapu and a 2027 seventh-rounder, adding a versatile defender with championship experience to their locker room.

Originally a third-round pick (76th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft, the 26-year-old Mapu brings three seasons of development from a proven Patriots system. In 44 career games with 10 starts, he has accumulated 89 tackles, three interceptions, five forced fumbles, and half a sack, showcasing a playmaking ability that should fit well in Ryans' defensive scheme.
