Matt McCarty birdied five of his first eight holes, three on spectacular putts from beyond 50 feet, and grabbed the lead in Thursday's storm-halted opening round of the PGA Truist Championship.McCarty, who sank just over 220 feet in putts, was the first player since distance measuring was introduced by the PGA Tour to make three putts from beyond 50 feet in one round.

Matt McCarty delivered a putting masterclass at Quail Hollow on Thursday, draining three jaw-dropping putts from beyond 50 feet to seize the lead in the storm-delayed opening round of the PGA Truist Championship. The 28-year-old American carded an eight-under-par 63, birdying five of his first eight holes and four of his last five to sit atop the leaderboard in Charlotte, North Carolina.

McCarty's performance was nothing short of historic. He became the first player since the PGA Tour introduced distance measuring to sink three putts from beyond 50 feet in a single round, totaling over 220 feet in made putts. "You never really expect to make one of them, let alone three in the span of like five or six holes," McCarty said, calling the feat surreal. "I've been focused on doing a lot of lag putting the last couple of days out here, just hitting a lot of shots and knowing how long in, and I guess that paid off a little bit."

Starting on the back nine, McCarty opened with a birdie from just inside five feet before unleashing his long-range magic. He rolled in a 52-foot birdie at the par-three 13th, then followed with a 60-foot stunner at the 16th and another 52-footer at the 17th. The hot streak continued as he birdied four of his final five holes, putting the field on notice.

Not to be overshadowed, South Korea's Im Sung-jae made a strong charge of his own. Starting on the back nine, he birdied six of his first eight holes and added a 12-foot eagle putt at the par-five seventh to sit at seven-under with one hole remaining when play was halted. Bad weather delayed the start by 90 minutes after more than two inches of overnight rain, and storms ultimately forced 20 of 72 players to finish their rounds on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, Masters champion Rory McIlroy had a quieter day, making 17 pars before closing with a birdie to finish at one-under. The spotlight, however, belonged firmly to McCarty, who won his first PGA title at the 2024 Black Desert Championship in just his third tour start. He was also a runner-up to world number one Scottie Scheffler in January and finished ninth last week at Doral. "Being in the mix all week was really good for me," McCarty said. "Game feels solid. Feel like I'm moving in the right direction."

For fans of the game and golf apparel alike, McCarty's performance is a reminder that precision and confidence on the greens can change everything—and that the right gear might just help you channel your inner pro.
