Cayden Bowman of Horseheads High School has etched his name into New York high school bowling history. The sophomore standout delivered a masterclass in consistency to capture the NYSPHSAA Division 1 individual state championship, a feat that has earned him the title of Elmira Star-Gazette/Corning Leader Boys Bowler of the Year for the 2025-26 season.
Bowman's path to the title was built on remarkable steadiness. After securing his state tournament berth with a dominant 1,900-pin performance at the Section 4 qualifier, he saved his best for the biggest stage. At AMF Syracuse Lanes, he strung together games of 234, 248, 255, 224, 243, and 234 for a six-game total of 1,438, winning the championship by a commanding 72-pin margin.
Reflecting on his winning strategy, Bowman emphasized the mental game, stating, "I knew in order to compete... I had to be consistent, I had to stay slow, I had to do certain things to make sure I would be able to compete, place top-10, possibly win the thing." His disciplined approach under pressure was the hallmark of a true champion.
Bowman's success continues a proud bowling legacy for Horseheads, a school that also produced Professional Bowlers Association legend Ryan Shafer. While Shafer's era predated the school's team, Bowman is now building his own legacy, proving that championship composure and precision are alive and well in the next generation of elite bowlers.
