There's something special about coming home, and for former Michigan State standout Joe Bachie, that opportunity has just become a reality. The veteran linebacker has signed a contract with the Detroit Lions, giving him another shot to solidify his place in the NFL—and this time, it's on familiar turf.
For Lions fans, the timing couldn't be more intriguing. Detroit's linebacker room is facing a major shakeup following the departure of Alex Anzalone, leaving a clear void in the middle of the defense. The starting responsibilities are expected to fall on Malcolm Rodriguez and Derrick Barnes, both of whom have battled significant injuries over the past two seasons. While their potential is undeniable, the question marks surrounding their durability make the depth chart a bit of a puzzle.
Behind them, the picture gets hazier. Grand Valley State product Trevor Nowaske, along with Damone Clark, Jimmy Rolder, and Erick Hunter, round out the group—but proven depth is in short supply. That's exactly why Bachie's arrival feels like more than just a roster move. It's an injection of experience, grit, and a familiar Midwestern work ethic.
Bachie's college career at Michigan State was nothing short of impressive. From 2016 to 2019, he developed into one of the Spartans' most reliable defensive pillars. As a sophomore, he appeared in all 12 games plus the bowl season, racking up 100 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and three interceptions. He followed that with another 101-tackle campaign as a junior, proving his consistency was no fluke. Even as a senior, limited to just eight games, he still managed 71 tackles and 3.5 sacks—a testament to his ability to produce whenever he stepped on the field.
His NFL journey began in 2020 with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he saw limited action in four games. But it was his next stop that truly showcased his potential. In 2021, Bachie signed with the Cincinnati Bengals and carved out a meaningful role during their Super Bowl run. He started two games that season, finishing with 30 tackles and a pass deflection—the most impactful stretch of his professional career to date.
Now, Bachie returns to Michigan with a chip on his shoulder and a chance to ignite a Lions linebacker corps hungry for stability. For a player who thrived in the green and white, wearing the Honolulu blue might just be the perfect next chapter.
