In a revealing interview, Bayern Munich legend Uli Hoeneß has made his stance clear on two key pillars of the club's future: the legendary Manuel Neuer and the faith in youth. Speaking on the podcast 'Auf eine weiß-blaue Tasse', the influential supervisory board member expressed a strong personal desire for Neuer to extend his storied career at the Allianz Arena for one more season.
Hoeneß outlined a visionary plan, stating, "Well, personally, if it were up to me, we would try to keep him for another year." The proposed role would see Neuer transition into a mentor for highly-rated young goalkeeper Johannes Urbig. "We would ask him to be a mentor for Urbig. That includes being willing to sit out some games," Hoeneß explained, emphasizing the club's belief in their academy product. "We think very highly of Urbig. We truly believe he can be the successor and he can only achieve that if he plays regularly."
Beyond the goalkeeping position, Hoeneß shared a fascinating anecdote about shaping the philosophy of head coach Vincent Kompany. He recalled a decisive meeting last summer where Kompany pushed to sign Dutch star Xavi Simons. "Vincent Kompany... said: 'Uli, we need Xavi Simons'," Hoeneß recounted. His response was both culinary and strategic: "I had put an apple pie on the table... and replied: 'Vincent, you can have another piece of the apple pie, but you're not getting Xavi. We want you to play the young players'."
This insistence on trusting the academy has paid significant dividends for Bayern this season. Kompany heeded the advice, giving opportunities to talents like Lennart Karl, a move Hoeneß now celebrates as a "piece of fortune and good business." It's a powerful reminder that building for the future sometimes requires patience and belief in homegrown potential, a philosophy that defines the most successful clubs.
